AKOS Foundation Canada is a registered charity supporting the activities of Agape Frontiers, a registered non-governmental organization (NGO) in Tanzania, dedicated to providing safe haven and education to young girls in need of help.

We had an amazing Earth Day celebration at the school and the girls had a ton of fun and learned how they can help build sustainability. Check out what we did

The Agape Knowledge Open School (AKOS) is building a future for girls who struggle with adversity, harm or hardships.

Agape Frontiers is doing all they can to show the girls who come to them that they are important and worthy of equality.

The classroom at AKOS with the girls eager to learn and working hard.

Your help is needed to support continued education, provide safe and secure daily living and maintain the AKOS facility. The girls need a safe space to sleep, a clean place to eat and an opportunity to grow and learn.

Please review the operational funding needs below and choose one that means something to you. Whether you can support us a little, or a lot, it will make all the difference and improve the lives of these deserving young girls.

Our partner, Agape Frontiers, continues to address issues including child marriage, teen pregnancy, all forms of abuse, and ill treatment by working closely with support networks and protection systems in the Shinyanga locality.

One of many successes has been the opening and operation of AGAPE KNOWLEDGE OPEN SCHOOL (AKOS) where hundreds of girls rescued from teen pregnancy, forced marriage, gender violence and poverty are brought to live and learn in safe surroundings.

The school has capacity to handle up to 51 girls at a time but it has needed to accommodate 65 girls during some periods. Significant facility support is needed. You can help!

Projects Needing Immediate Funding:

We are currently working on a Hydroponics test project where we are trying to grow locally sourced vegetables to provide the girls with a steady supply of nutritious vegetables to their daily diet. One of the biggest issues the girls face daily is getting proper nutrition in their diet; though we currently purchase a large quantity of vegetables each week, it is not enough to sustain them throughout the week. Hydroponics uses a controlled environment which reduces the amount of water required to grow vegetables and is 100% recycled.
Please consider helping the girls.

Water Tower $800 Storage Tank $700

FUNDING RECEIVED!

The local government sponsored a water well that is now complete.  The pump will soon be installed; however, the water will need to be pumped up to a water tower and lines run into the kitchen and bath areas to supply running water.

This system will also allow the school to install irrigation for the 5 acres of potential crop lands that are owned by the school.

Food Security $20/month/girl

Provides the necessary food for one girl for one month including fresh vegetables, grains and occasional proteins.

Personal Items $25/month/girl

Providing uniforms for each girl along with personal hygiene items that are currently available only sporadically.

Windows for School $1250

FUNDING RECEIVED!

The new cement floor has now been installed for the school side of the building. The requirement now is for 9 windows for this end of the building to prevent rain and bugs from entering the school.

Bathroom Fixtures $1650

As we have slowly been working towards a completed bathroom for the girls, Completed a roof in 2022 and finished stucco inside the building this 2024. we really need assistance to install tile and bathroom fixtures to ensure a sanitary environment and secure place for the girls to bath and use the facilities.

Hydroponics to support school Nutrition for the girls

The goal of the Hydroponics test project at AKOS is to establish a simple, low cost hydroponic system to grow vegetables. The system aims to maximize the use of locally available materials and resources while minimizing reliance on electricity. Key objectives include:

1) Demonstrating water-efficient agriculture techniques.

2) Providing a sustainable source of fresh vegetables.

3) Scaling up the system to feed a larger number of girls with minimal water use.

Solar Panels for Water Pump $2500

FUNDING RECEIVED!

Solar power system for the water pump requires panels, racks and batteries. When completed, this will function to provide electricity to power the water well which provides water to the cookhouse, lavatory and school.

School Supplies & Laptops

Currently, there is one computer for the entire school and the hope is to provide more for the staff and girls to access. Notebooks, pencils and pens are always in need as well.

Cement Floor for Classroom $900

FUNDING RECEIVED!

Replacing the dirt floor on the classroom side of the school with cement will allow for higher levels of cleanliness and improve hygiene for the staff and girls.

Chicken Coop & Chickens

FUNDING RECEIVED!

The cost of protein is prohibitive in Tanzania. Installing a chicken coop would allow continued access to fresh eggs and occasional protein.

We can still use a monthly donation to support the purchase of chicken feed, at $0.50 per KG.

Materials for Living

More needs to be done to improve the girls’ living conditions.  The primitive dormitory is built adjacent to the school and is meant to house 35 girls but has often been used to support over 50 girls, ages 11 to 18 years. They have no running water, cooking is done over an open fire outside and a single solar panel allows the teachers to charge their phones.

Contributions from CUSO

CUSO Canada, a Canadian charitable organization that receives substantial funding from Global Affairs Canada, has provided assistance to Agape Frontiers by funding Canadian volunteers for teaching and facility support that would not have been otherwise possible. These volunteers subsequently engaged in personal fundraising in Canada during 2020 that provided teaching supplies and necessary improvements to the school facility, including a cement floor on the dormitory side of the building to enhance sanitary and cleanliness issues, plus windows to keep the rains out. Currently, CUSO Canada is funding local teachers and one Canadian IT volunteer.

Support for Communities

Education happens within the context of a larger community. Our vision extends beyond the school to help ensure students and their families have access to additional resources.
