Bathroom Upgrades
We could use your help.
One major focus of the Akos Foundation has been improving the overall hygiene and sanitation for the girls, and at times their babies, living at the Agape Knowledge Open School.
The initial lavatory was an open 50’ x 12’ structure of concrete block with 8 individual stalls, 4 on each side of a passageway, leaving the girls exposed to the weather elements. Water was available in buckets. Not an appropriate experience for the 76 girls then in residence at the school.
Thanks to the incredible support of donors, Akos Foundation undertook to improve the situation. We were able to successfully enclose the structure, erecting a sturdy roof and creating windows. We then added a bit of lighting, doors on each end of the passageway and installed plumbing to each stall.
Then, this past year, we constructed a water tower and installed 2 large tanks that allowed for running water being piped to each of the stalls for personal activities of toileting, showering and bathing, creating a safer and much more pleasant hygienic experience for the girls.
But our mission is far from over! Now, we're gearing up for the next exciting phase, and we need your help to make it a reality.
With your generous support, we aim to refit the bathroom stalls with better surfaces for cleaning and modern conveniences like efficient flushing units and invigorating showers.
No more makeshift bucket baths! Your contribution will allow us to provide the girls with the luxury of a full bathing experience, promoting not just hygiene, but also confidence and dignity.
Bare brick walls and a stark, rough concrete floor do not allow for proper cleaning for the prevention of infection, fungus or other medical issues. By tiling the floors and walls with a smooth stucco finish and durable tiling, we can improve the overall cleanliness. We're not only enhancing aesthetics but also ensuring a safer, more hygienic environment. Stucco and tiling expenses totaling around 3.4 million shillings or $1,800 CAD.
All of the existing toileting units need to be upgraded. One of the squatter toilets will be replaced with a modern seating unit to accommodate individuals with disabilities or mobility challenges, ensuring inclusivity for all. In addition, sprayer units and shower equipment will be installed in each stall.
With installation costs, we estimate fixtures at approximately 4 million shillings or $2,100 CAD. While these figures may seem daunting, logistical challenges in Shinyanga inflate material costs, and the size of the bathroom necessitates a substantial investment in stucco and tile as well as the equipment.
This project isn't just about bricks and mortar; it's about empowering the girls to lead healthier, more dignified lives. Your support will make a tangible difference, providing them with the privacy and cleanliness they deserve.
Together, we can make this vital upgrade a reality and ensure the girls have the facilities they need to thrive and assist with the transformation of their lives.
