Materials for Living
Our initial project in 2020 included replacing the dirt floor in the residential portion of the school with cement floors and adding windows with screens. These improvements have led to a substantial decrease in the number of illnesses experienced by the girls and staff and an increase in the ability to keep their personal items clean.
Our first project for 2022 was replacing the dirt floor on the school side of the building, which is now completed. Financial support was received in order to add windows and screens and install a roof over the latrine area which will all contribute to improved hygiene and overall wellness.
Our next focus will be to continue work on securing proper water supply for both the school buildings and for irrigation that will allow for the planting and harvesting of grains and vegetable for consumption and selling of extra crops in the market.

During the summer of 2022, several projects were completed at the AKOS site.
A roof was added over the lavatory to provide protection from the weather and increase the cleanliness of the area for the students and staff.
Construction began on installing a cement floor in the teacher office and extending a partition wall to the ceiling to create a second smaller classroom adjacent to the teacher office with better sound reduction.
Windows were installed on the classroom side of the school to provide protection from the weather and insects and to assist in maintaining the cleanliness of the school.
A small water tank was installed at the entrance to the cook house to facilitate easier preparation for meals.
Lastly, picnic tables were constructed and placed in shady areas around the grounds of the school to give the students and staff a place to take their meals and to finish school work. This small addition has increased the well being of the students through enhanced hygiene practices.
